Have you ever had a skipped heartbeat or your heart rate data on your Garmin looked very unusual, perhaps very elevated?

Extreme endurance athletes, like long-distance runners, bikers, and even cross-country skiers, are at an increased risk for irregular heartbeats and increase heart problems.

In recent years, several prominent athletes have been sidelined with arrhythmias including Basque pro cyclist Haimar Zubledia and Norwegian Olympic cross-country skier Marit Bjorden. In 2012 ultra-marathoner Micah True died at age 58 of fatal heart arrhythmia. More recently in 2013 Lennard Zinn a US national team cyclist quit racing due to the diagnoses of atrial tachycardia, now Zinn writes for VeloNews.
